About the course
PADI Open Water Diver course in Havelock is the first scuba certification level. First of all a highly-trained PADI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to dive at home or abroad and be an ambassador for the underwater world.
How to earn your Scuba Diving Certification
Learn about scuba diving principles and terminology (either offline or online), then learn basic scuba skills in a pool (or pool-like environment) with a highly trained PADI Instructor. When you’re ready, make four dives in an open water environment (the ocean, a lake) with your instructor supporting you every step of the way.
1. PADI e Learning
PADI eLearning makes it easy to fit scuba lessons into a busy schedule. Learn about scuba diving principles and terminology whenever, wherever it’s convenient for you. In other words, it’s your course on your time. Study offline or online using a computer or mobile device. Connect with your instructor whenever you have a question. – eLearning Time Commitment: 5-10 hours
2. With Your Instructor
Practice using scuba gear in a pool (or pool-like environment) until you’re comfortable. PADI training includes practice “mini dives” to help you build confidence in your new abilities before making four dives in open water. – Prerequisites: Able to swim; medically fit for diving – Total Time Commitment: 4-7 days – Minimum Age: 10 years or older – Depth: Expect shallow dives (12m/40ft); however, the maximum allowed depth is 18m/60ft.

Orientation & Confined-Water Training
- Meet your PADI instructor and complete paperwork.
- Equipment introduction and assembly.
- Shallow-water training and essential scuba skills.
- Breathing, buoyancy and underwater communication.
- Review of eLearning and knowledge development.
Skills Practice & Open Water Dives 1 & 2
- Complete remaining confined-water skills.
- Open Water Dives 1 and 2, when ready.
- Practice underwater skills and buoyancy.
- Dive briefing and debriefing with your instructor.
Open-Water Dives 3 & 4
- Two instructor-supervised training dives.
- Underwater navigation and buoyancy practice.
- Complete outstanding open-water skills.
- Final knowledge review and assessment, if required.
Buffer Day & Certification
- Complete any outstanding training or assessments.
- Additional skills practice, if needed.
- Final instructor review and certification processing after all requirements are met.

Do I need previous scuba diving experience?
No previous scuba diving experience is required. The PADI Open Water Diver course is designed for beginners. Our instructors will guide you through diving theory, equipment use, confined-water training and four open-water training dives.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. You must be able to swim 200 metres without stopping or swim 300 metres using a mask, fins and snorkel. You must also float or tread water for 10 minutes. No particular swimming stroke is required.
How long does the course take?
Our planned course schedule is approximately four days. The actual duration depends on your progress, weather and sea conditions. We recommend completing your PADI eLearning before arriving in Havelock.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your safety is our priority. If weather or sea conditions are unsuitable, training may be postponed or rescheduled. Our team will discuss the available options with you.
When will I receive my PADI certification?
Once you successfully complete all required training dives, skills and knowledge assessments, your instructor can process your PADI Open Water Diver certification. Your digital certification becomes available after processing.
How long should I wait before flying?
After multiple dives or multiple days of diving, allow at least 18 hours before flying. Planning a longer surface interval is preferable. Please discuss your travel schedule with your instructor.
How deep can I dive after certification?
The standard PADI Open Water Diver certification qualifies adult divers to dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres with a qualified buddy, within their training and experience. Junior divers have additional age-related depth limits.
Is a medical certificate required?
Every student must complete a diver medical questionnaire. Depending on your answers, you may need clearance from a physician before participating in scuba diving activities.
